Not sold that she was 34 weeks
My sister just had her baby via Emergency C-Section due to preeclamsia. She was only suppose to be about 34 weeks along and the baby boy was born 18.5 inches long and 6 pounds! I was vary surprised that he was this big for being such a preemie. I was 33 weeks and only weighted 3 pounds 9 ounces. Anyone else have this occur?

She may very well have been farther along than the doctor thought. I know my daughter was supposedly at term, but she was huge (9 pounds 3 ounces) and I really have a gut feeling that she baked too long. Call it mama's intuition, but I think when my doctor said I was ready she was actually a couple of weeks over due.

I have been told that doctors are not always correct and that is why they use the 40 weeks just to make sure that the baby is developed enough. I would say they miscalculated on your sister. Was everything ok?

Same thing happened to my sister. The doctor told her she was 2 weeks early and she ended up with a nearly 10 pound baby! However in the hospital the nurse told my sister that no, she was most likely 2 weeks over due because my nephew had that white filmy stuff on him that happens when the bun is in the oven too long. I would probably say they miscalculated a bit for your sister too!

Miscalculations happen all the time, even with ultrasounds they aren't 100% accurate. It's good that the baby was bigger hopefully that means he was older than they thought and he won't have any problems.

The only way, other than misdating, the baby could be that big would be if your sister had gestational diabetes. You could also check the skin to see if baby is peeling already. That also means she was finished.

Not necessarily true, Deenah - some women just grow big babies! I had two over 10 pounds, and did NOT have GD and while one was overdue by 9 days, the other was right at term (and I had been charting with her, so I KNEW the dates were correct!)

Yes its not 100% when they give you the due date. It is usually close but not right on. Also they go on a 28 day cycle for your menstrual cycle and not many women are that perfect.

It is just a guess, yes educated, but still just a guess. My son was born at 9 pounds and was 2 days late. I am going to guess he was a week or so overdue, but he is a happy healthy boy and that is what matters.
