Ausrufezeichen overweight 3 year old??

My son will be 3 years old next month, and at his last checkup was 38inches tall, but weighs 57 pounds...I have asked the doctor about this a few times, but he continues to tell me he isnt really concerned about it right now because he says muscle weighs more than fat-which i understand, and i do agree my son doesnt "look" fat!! he looks solid, but he doesnt have rolls or nothing like that...I'm not saying that I think it's healthy for my son to be at this weight-but he eats healthy most of the time!! and he doesn't it big amounts!! I was just wondering if there is anyone else out there thats been in my situation and how they took care of it??? The dr. also said that within a few months time my son could grow 3 or 4 inches and his weight would ration out... im just so worried---

My son weight about 60 pound when he was three years old. He was over weight all his baby life. When he turned four , he started losing weight, or should I say he started to get taller and the overweight look just went away. After he turned five it looked like he weight the right weight. but the doctor kept saying he was over weight even through he looked skinny to me. My son grew up to be a slim 6'6".
If your son seems to be handling the weight okay, don't worry to much about it. The weight usually will comes off as he grew.

I think signs of obesity should be checked early in childhood. The earlier the better. Because a child growing up obese is more likely to develop a low self esteem and might find it very difficult to lose weight later.

If he doesn't LOOK fat, but just looks "solid," then I would say your doctor is right. While childhood obesity can be an issue, it is also true that many children put on a little extra "padding" before growth spurts and *making* an issue of a child's weight when they are very young *could* be a trigger for eating disorders later.

I completely agree with Mom2JDS no parents should be making a big deal about weight with a child that young. Play with your children help keep them active and feed them proper amounts of healthy foods. Harping on weight with a 3 year old will just lead to problems down the road.

As has been said-try not to panic or you WILL end up with issues. Right now you should be encouraging activity, limiting TV time and stationary activities and keeping sweets to a minimum. But don't forget he's a kid too, and needs to enjoy himself.

I would agree, being solid does not always lead to being fat. If you are feeding him healthy foods and he is not sedentary I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Look, when he gets really active that weight will fall right off. If you're feeding him properly, foods instead of sweets, I would take the doctor's advice and not worry too much.
