Postpartum depression?

I think I've been having some issues with postpartum depression for the last 4 months or so, and recently some things have piled on top of there and just become unbearable. I'm going in this week to speak to my doctor and have my thyroid tested... I'm somewhat unwilling to do depression meds until it is my last choice... anyone been where I am? I know I am facing a long road out, as some of the situations that are adding to my stress will not be resolved for some time.

Depression is hard and they always seem to start with drugs and insist they must be used indefinitely. I have a friend who taught herself to realize when she was depressed so that she could realize it and take steps to not let herself shut down or have to take meds for it. Sometimes realizing when you are down can help you from hitting bottom, although if it is truly chemical in nature the meds may be necessary.

I have dealt with depression for about fifteen years, and it is only since the birth of my daughter that I have developed coping mechanisms. I have never taken meds for it, but have learned that above all I need to sleep when I am starting to slip. I need to take the time to look out for myself, and that means extra sleep and rest, and whatever else I need at the time.

I hope that you can figure things out, take the time to figure out what you need, be it better support from a partner or what have you.
