Potty Training in a Day?

I swear parenting magazines are a wealth of products you just can't believe.
Potty Training in One day is touted as being perfect for today's parents and features Potty Scotty or Potty Patty presumably based on your child's sex.

The actual products seem to range from a booklet to a book/DVD, potty doll, potty seat, potty toilet seat, and diapers. Price range $9.95-69.95.

Can you actually potty train your kid in one day?

I don't know about 1 day, but both my kids were trained in about 3 days. I waited until they were showing signs of readiness: telling me when they had peed or pooped in their diaper, interest in the toilet and it's function, and waking up dry from nap or staying dry for a long time in their diaper. We talked about it for a few weeks leading up to it, and then got a timer. The first day in undies we went every 45 minutes to "try", the second day we moved that to an hour or so, and stayed at 1 hour for about a week, then did two hours until they were able to tell me when they needed to go. It worked well for us.

Personally, I'm wary of this approach. On the surface, it seems like a wonderful idea, but I wonder if it isn't traumatic for the child. I would have to know more about the practice to really judge it, but I don't as we do elimination communication, so there is never a "potty training" day.

As I understand it the method is about thirty years old. In the morning you get up and put the child in underwear for the first time-making a big deal of doing so. Ideally the days before you will have been showing the child how the toilet works, and have been putting a doll on the potty after pretending to have the doll drink. You may read books on potty training, or watch DVDs too.

Then you offer the child lots of an enticing drink on the potty training day. Taking the child to the potty ever half hour-an expect lots of accidents. Ideally this should be done somewhere without carpet

If the child pees on the potty, then great, put a sticker on a chart. If they don't, drink some more soda and try again half an hour later.

If they have an accident, don't make a big deal of it. Move them to the potty whilst they are peeing still, don't remove underwear but try and catch some pee in the potty. Clean up the floor and them-warm weather is best for this.

This relies on having the child drink more than normal to present more opportunities for learning. The problem would come if you never have a catch in the potty because you never have the chance for positive reinforcement.

As for trauma-it all depends on how the parent deals with it.

Personally I never understood why people insist on buying things like that. To me it's all money wasted. But in all reality I think it would be extremely tiring for both the parent and child to potty train all day! My vote is against this tecnique.

It's not tiring at all actually. We used a variation on this technique with great success. My daughter had turned around to me and told me she would not wear diapers any more. Flat out refused.

So I either had to potty train her fast, or force her to wear diapers. One way or the other, there had to be some kind of pushing.

Given that she wanted out of diapers, I went the logical way and potty trained her. We had one very wet day of playing in a room with a tiled floor. Next day-not a single accident. We had three days set aside just in case.

I didn't buy anything, other than a book that cost $5 about Ernie from Sesame St potty training. But I had been talking to her a lot before about how we potty, and putting her on the potty for her first thing in the morning pee, as she was waking up dry.

You know, lots of parenting aspects are tiring or work on our behalf. Why should potty training be any different/

I hate potty training! I haven't had a single child that was easy to potty train. They all took months. One of them would even run and find places to hide in the house (like under the table, behind a chair, beneath the Christmas tree...) and do his business. It is the only thing I am not looking forward to with my toddler!

Lol, I was thinking the same thing, I spent all day every day for a couple weeks potty training my puppy. And because he was untrained on the plane ride up (being forced to pee in his flight crate) it actually was months before we were accident free since he's an excitable pee-er. I've trained other puppies for potty training in a day, and if kids aren't too different than puppies this should work well. We used broth and a "potty spot" for puppy training.
