Problems Bottle Feeding

Our 11 week old Sydney has been somewhat of a fussy eater for quite some time now. However, we aren't happy just categorizing her as fussy, and would rather find out what is causing this behavior. It's not every feeding, but often occurs at her bedtime feeding. She will take down the first ounce or two rather quickly, after that it may take up to an additional hour to get her to finish the remaining 3-4 ounces (5 ounce feedings). She'll take the bottle, and then whip her head back and launch into a hard cry. This happens repeatedly throughout the remainder of the feeding.

We had her tested for AR last week, and she does not have acid reflux. We don't feel she's any more gassy than the average baby, and we do burp her often during feedings. We also give her Mylicon with every feeding to help with any gas she might have.

We started her on Enfamil Lipil with Iron, and then our pediatrician suggested we try something easier to digest, so we transitioned over to Good Start Supreme DHA & ARA. There really was no change due to this switch. She then suggested we try adding some Enfamil AR formula to the Good Start (suggested before we had the AR barium test), and we have been feeding her a mixture of 25% Enfamil AR and 75% Good Start ever since. Sydney is on a somewhat strict feeding schedule, and is fed 5 ounces every 4 hours between the hours of 5am and 10pm. She usually sleeps through the night from 10pm to 5am.

So we are here to ask if anyone else has had this type of situation, and ask for any insight you may be able to lend. At tonight's feeding we will take a video clip of the behavior and post it on our website, and will update this thread with a link to the video.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried feeding her smaller amounts more frequently? It almost sounds like she really doesn't want those last ounces. I would try feeding her 2 or 3 ounces every 2 or 3 hours. I don't think any of my kids were going 4 hours between feeds until they were 4 or 5 months old. My middle daughter especially seemed to have a small stomach and couldn't take very much at once.

Sounds to me like she is just not that hungry. 5 ounces is a lot for an 11 week old baby, unless she is a large baby. Its best to start now letting her decide how much she needs to eat. This sets the stage for healthy eating habits later on. When we eat what our body says we need we get the right amount, when we eat based upon "finish your plate", etc we tend to overeat.

If it was a sudden thing, I would suggest she might be teething or have an ear infection, as they tend to cause similar pain and sucking only makes it worse. But if this has been going on for a while, then thats probably not it. And I would imagine your doctor would have checked her for that as well when you visited.

Do you think she might have food allergies? They can take a while to show up, but it sounds like you have only tried milk-based formula.

It could be too that she is overtired or overhungry at that point, you may try moving her feeding and bedtime up.

Hi,
We are presenting a site for the kids who are suffering from oppositional defiant disorder for their parents because i think it is important for parents like us to have a place to learn, grow and share their experiences with other parents. You can also download free book from here which i wrote because I realized most of the good information on parenting tips and tricks costs a lot of money. So I figured I would write what I've learned over the years studying behavior techniques and give it away for free so you at least have a place to start.
It is far from all-inclusive but it is a great free resource. It's packed with tips and techniques I used when Mike's behavior problems got really bad.
From this site you can learn about many topics like:-
Conduct Disorder: - Conduct disorder is a serious condition affecting our children. Children suffering from conduct disorder are often passed off as just “bad kids”, when in fact these kids suffer from a mental illness.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder: - Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder in children and adolescents, characterized by extreme aggressiveness and defiance, as well as anger and hostility towards others. Clearly, all children at some point in their lives will show signs of aggressiveness, and the reluctance to listen to parents and other authority figures. This is a natural, normal and healthy part of the life of a growing child, and is to be reasonably expected throughout several periods of a child‘s life. However, the diagnosis of ODD is held for those children with severe behavioral issues, in which those issues appear for at least 6 months.
Etc.

Thanks
