School Shopping

School starts in jus 2 weeks here, and my daughter and I are battling over school clothes. She is a pre-teen, but she wants to dress like a 21 year old! All short skirts and strappy tank tops. I don't think that is OK. What do you do?

I know some parents that are right there with you on the school shopping deal. I just talked to someone today who school starts soon for her girl and she is not happy as the girl is in the "I need everything" stage.

I would never let my girl wear something I wouldn't wear out in public as a mom. So no short skirt, maybe a tank top, but not the super short, super low ones some people want. There is too much of a movement towards allowing any child to dress like a street walker these days.

I don't really have that problem yet because my daughter is six but I can see how it will be in five or six years. I just tell her now that she can't have it and if she isn't careful, I will buy her what I want and not what she wants. I don't know how that will work when she is older, I expect we will fight more over clothes then, but for now it works.

I still don't get why teens think they need everything in the world going back to school. I really can not wait until some teens I know now, go out and get jobs then realize how $$$ things are.

I always had a set amount to spend on clothes after I grew out of the two new outfits or what not a year. If I asked for as much as some kids I pass in the stores have my mom would have disowned me for sure. To this day I can hear my mom going "$10 each is plenty for a shirt or pants plus one pair of shoes" haha.

You tell her NO. You are the parent and you have final say in what she wears. You have to let her have her own personality but you can stop her from dressing too old too. I'm going through the same thing with my almost 14 year old.

That's where it helps to homeschool I don't have to worry about my children wanting to dress in the "very latest" fashions because of peer pressure.

On the other hand, I'm thankful that my teen girl has no interest in the low necklines and high hems that are all the rage, so I don't have to fight that battle.

I hope you figure out how to encourage her to wear what is appropriate
