I think a good way to do it if you are looking to save money but are ultimately concerned with the child's safety is to buy new anything that is going to come in contact with the child. The nursery furniture like bureaus, change tables and the like can be bought second hand but give it a good sterilizing before you put it in use. Mattresses and the like should be new in my opinion. Clothes and towels etc can always be sterilized by washing. You have to be careful with baby cribs as they are continually being changed and there are minimum safety requirements you have to have like spacing between bars etc.

The best way to go is to register and put everything on there that you could possibly want and throw the world's biggest baby shower and invite those in laws and family members you have that are only invited to parties like this! hehe

You can buy used baby furniture if you can’t afford new for your baby. But some products come with limited period warranty so those will add risk.
