Switching to one nap

What is the best way to switch from 2 shorter naps to one long nap? Do you just know when the baby is ready? What has worked for you and your children?

With my first, we switched her at 13 months because her early nap was getting later and shorter, and same with her evening nap, and she wasn't going to bed until quite late in the evening. so we dropped the evening nap, and everything fell into place.

With my second, poor guy has been on one nap for several months, since 8ish months probably, miserably. Sometimes he'll sneak in a 15 minute in the morning, but I need them to nap together for my sanity, so one nap it is.

My mom always swore by this. She walways gave me a morning nap. And then in the afternoon she would run errands and I would fall asleep in the car. I got a quick 30 minute nap and she said I was the happiest child.
