Two year old unresponsive

My friend's two year old son worries me. He seems so unresponsive. You can talk to him, clap your hands, whistle, play music and he ignores it. He won't even respond when you call his name. She says that he has been tested and isn't deaf but he certainly seems so. Any idea what else it could be?

My son has autism. That sounds very similar to what he tends to do. The thing about it is that it takes about 3 years to get an autism diagnosis. It is not as easy to get the diagnosis as people might think. Trouble is if you don't start soon enough then the child will be in school with out the help he needs while a diagnosis is worked out.

I agree that it sounds worryingly like autism. The trouble is I wouldn't have a clue how you could go about gently bringing this up without hurting your friend.

I would encourage your friend to talk with her son's pediatrician and maybe even offer to go with them to the doctor for some support.
