I would go for books specifically books that are written by successful people. People that are reading successful books will know my child because of that good book. I don't like my child to have a TV or movie name for those two will easily fade.

When I made this thread, I was referring to ANY kind of character name. Either from books, movies, games, mythology, or anything else you would happen to think of!

So yeah, no real rules.

Err, i'm assuming this was a reply to me anyway. Forgive me if I was wrong!

I don't think I could ever name my child after something like a cartoon, sitcom or anything like that. Maybe it would depend the book if I went that route. Nothing like Piglet or anything though.

Not all character names are as unfit sounding as Piglet. You would never want to give your child a name like that, but maybe something that sounds interesting?

I mean, there's so many different names out there. Why stick to the merely typical?

My names choices are all Biblical. I am firmly of the opinion that fashion names are kind of cruel to the child who will have to grow up with it, and that really the only thing you can do to show respect to your child is to give them a name that is low key.

I don't want a name that is little girly, as she will seem odd as an adult, and nothing that will go out of fashion.

My mom got my name from a freakin' soap oprea, a character was also pregnant had her baby and named her 'Lori' and mom liked it and named me the same. For some reason that has always irritated me. I'm not sure why other than I thought is was a stupid reason to name me that...But really shouldn't that's a bit irrational I realize. I don't really care for my name, but most people don't really like their names do they?

I always feel a little sorry for kids who's names are too wierd. And totally unable to pronounce without being 'told' or 'hear' the name. The work I do requires me to call people often from a 'written' name, and I just cringe when I see something like, "Qauntiquia" Smith, I of course just say, 'hello, Ms. Smith". I also saw some research re: resume's , and potential employers flat rejecting them on name alone, regardless of experience etc. No one likes to contact someone and have absolutely no idea if they are male/female, or cannot even come close to pronouncing their names.

I think a name of a character is ok, as long as it's not too odd. Because I do like unique names, just not weird ones. Remember (was it) Frank Zapa who named his daughter 'moon beam'? And what about these names that are inanimate objects? Like 'apple', what's with that?

We too tried to 'make fun' of names before we chose them for the kids. All names CAN be made fun of, some though are just plain obvious!

If it were up to my sister, if she ever has kids to start with, I have a feeling ones nickname atleast will be Whiney, she is a complete Pooh fanatic, and I am going to feel bad for the kid when they get picked on.

I understand that some names could be embarrassing for children to grow up with, but not all names are that bad as I said. You want a name that can be pronounced, and does not seem to be completely off the wall.

I totally agree, and the worst has got to be the names that are clearly made up by the parents. "I wanted it to be different" I hear as the reason, but did they really think about how it would affect the child? Having a name that no one can pronounce and that the child cannot spell is not cool.

I would want to but I couldn't do that to my child. I mean I like the name Eureka which comes from an anime show that I like watching, but I would always think of how they'd get teased. My mind would be filled with 'Eureka! I got it!'
